An Introduction to Vihar Vizslas
Vihar
Vizsla's is located in scenic Niagara Falls, Ontario approximately 1
hour south from Toronto and just moments from the US Border and Buffalo
NY.
I have been involved with vizslas since 1999, when I acquired my first
vizsla Kivalo Elso Piros Baron from Alex Richard’s Kivalo Vizslas.
Since that time, I have been actively involved in performance and
conformation events and Baron has become
BISS Am/Can CH Kivalo Elso Piros Baron FD CD CGC CGN NAVHDA Utility Prize 1.
Baron has become the cornerstone of my breeding program as he is an
accomplished sire, producing dogs which excel in both the field and the
confirmation ring.
My Philosophy on Breeding
The focus of my breeding program is to produce dual quality dogs:
versatile dogs with correct conformation suitable to hunt in the field.
I am a hunter first and foremost. When
I breed, hunting ability is paramount.
My dogs are hunted on upland game, both feathered and furred, from the
grouse woods of Northern Ontario to the plains of Saskatchewan. My dogs are used on waterfowl on all
bodies of water from the smallest wood duck haunts to the open waters of the
great lakes. My dogs are my loyal, personal and indispensable hunting companions, and
a day in the field without a dog is a wasted day.
Vihar Vizsla's are
bred for versatility. They are equally at home in the field and
in the water. My dogs are highly driven in the field,
demonstrating
fine noses, stylish points and natural affinity to retrieve. In the
water, they show the same drive, working tirelessly to locate and
retrieve
downed game. Even though Vihar Vizsla's
demonstrate an abundance of hunt and prey drive, at the same time I expect that they remain
even tempered and well mannered as my dogs live with my family in the
house.
The necessity for
dual quality dogs is simple. I believe that dogs with proper conformation will have
greater longevity in the field and are less prone to injury over the long term.
Prior to my involvement in vizslas, I was
actively involved in standardbred horse racing. This experience is
where I learned the real value
of correct conformation and it's direct relationship to performance and
soundness. This is the foundation of my breeding program.
I am also a senior judge with NAVHDA the North American Versatile
Hunting Dog Association. NAVHDA is the
primary venue through which I test and evaluate my dogs, and base my breeding
decisions.
Therefore, my focus when breeding is producing dual
quality dogs of even temperament, highly biddable and very driven.
Not simply because they
are beautiful to watch, but because dogs with correct conformation are durable dogs, and durability is
a necessity with hunting dogs.
